Stephane Sarrazin snatched provisional pole for Peugeot ahead of the Le Mans 24 Hours race after Audi had dominated the majority of the first qualifying session.

Audi looked set to seal the top three spots on the grid after posting fast times during the first 30 minutes of the session.

But Sarrazin bested the R18s by nine-tenths of a second with a lap of three minutes 27.033 seconds, 30 minutes from time.

The session was stopped a minute from the scheduled end when Nick Leventis crashed his Strakka HPD.

Allan McNish set the early pace with a lap of 3:29.078 before Mike Rockenfeller went faster with a lap of 3:27.949.

Traffic hampered Peugeot's early attempts as Alex Wurz suffered in the final sector of the track, only managing a lap of 3:30.254.

Sebastien Bourdais was the next to post a fast lap in the number nine Peugeot but he could only manage second with a lap of 3:29.466, and failed to improve on his time throughout the session.
Tom Kristensen improved the number three R18's time, bringing it down to 3:28.301 before a five-minute delay in proceedings when Romain Dumas's Audi collided with Roald Geothe's stationary Gulf AMR Aston Martin Vantage.

Audi pulled their cars in for bodywork changes while Peugeot sent Sarrazin out on fresh tyres, 90 minutes into the session.

The Frenchman found a clear lap to storm to the top of the timesheets pushing the Andre Lotterer/Marcel Fassler/ Benoit Treluyer Audi down to second and the Rockenfeller/Dumas/Timo Bernhard Audi down into third.
